How To Sit In Your Car Safely
Let's face it, for those who have been driving for a while, we don't put too much thought into jumping in the car and throwing on our seatbelt. But when was the last time you assessed your driving position to optimise your safety? Here's a quick checklist.
-
Steering wheel. Adjust up/down and in/out where possible so that you have clear vision out of the windscreen and your instrument panel. Hold the wheel at a 10 to 3 position. (picture a clock)
-
Seat. All seats will go back/forward while some will also go up and down. The optimum distance from the steering wheel is when you put your arms straight and your wrists rest on the top of the wheel.
-
Head rest. Make sure that your head rest is supporting your head. If you are taller, you may need to adjust this upwards.
-
Mirrors. Adjust your rear vision mirrors and side mirrors to optimise your vision to the side and rear of the car.
-
Seat belt. After you have adjusted the above, secure your seat belt. The lap sash should sit tight and low over your lap. The upward sash should sit at an angle from the left side of your body over your right shoulder. Most cars have a seat belt height adjuster to help it remain in this position. Remember that your airbag is a Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) and is not a substitute for a seatbelt.
